A very well-analyzed and well-crafted commentary on the current state of exzz10z. In the 50s, the hive mind in America was a very conservative, very conformist exercise of narrowmindedness. Everyone seemed to be on the same safe page. That illusion/delusion was very short lived. The goal of the Rove's of the world is to return to those times of authoritarian control and subserviance of the masses via information control. As you stated, the hive today is abuzz with a near-caotic concophany of expressions of variety and choices. Try as they will, short of a fascistic takeover, going back is not an option. Although there is no going back, concurrent to the new millenium awareness, there is a strong tendency towards Ludditical response by the masses of the overwhelmed. The exponentially expanding amounts of information and the immediate and constant access to the "crisis of the hour", is, as you alluded to, widening the gap between those on the bus and those left behind. Some are simply escaping the new reality by lack of participation and "I Love Lucy" reruns, but I find many of those left behind are full of fear and paranoia. This group, if large enough, and not brought into the fold (paraphrasing your statement)are prime fodder for reactionary manipulation. New millenia dilemma.

Disclosure: my attack on truth is deliberately narrow and provocative. It ignores the truth in mechanistic function and predictive modeling, though thse may be characterized as merely more persistent shared hallucinations.
